Compact Luxury at its Finest - Compare the BMW X1 vs. the Volvo XC40

With versatility and style, the BMW X1 stands out as a subcompact crossover that drivers from Burlington to Hanover, NH rely on for commutes, carpools, road trips, and more. More than an SUV, it's a BMW signature X Series SAV, and it's one of the most popular models we carry at The Automaster BMW in Shelburne.

With more and more drivers in the Williston and Stowe area gravitating towards to easy-to-drive and maneuver style of a subcompact crossover these days, we understand if there are other models competing for your attention next to our BMW X1. To help you make the best decision and see which option is right for your needs, we've put the X1 side by side with the similarly sized Volvo XC40 for you here. Read on to learn more.

Power and Performance

Starting right out of the gate with more of the power and performance that drivers like, the entry-level, base model, the BMW X1 gets a standard, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The Volvo XC40, on the other hand, also starts with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but its output and level of power pale in comparison. Look for a base rating of 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque with the Volvo SUV.

Not only can you look forward to a better performance on base model X1 SAVs, but you can also expect to go further on a tank of gas than you would with the XC40. For example, the BMW X1 gets an EPA rating of 27 mpg combined, while the XC40 earns 26 mpg combined. Plus, the X1 has a gas tank that can hold more than 16 gallons of fuel, helping it average 386 miles in the city and 531 miles on the highway per fill up, while the XC40 gas tank holds just 14 gallons, giving it a shorter range of just 327 miles in the city and 454 miles on the highway per fill up.

Interior Passenger and Cargo Space

Whether they're in the front seat or the back, your passengers will have more space to stretch out in with the BMW X1 than the Volvo XC40. While both models are similarly sized and have roughly the same wheelbase width and length, the X1 maximizes interior space better. You can look forward to two extra inches of front seat headroom in the BMW, as well as more headroom and legroom in the backseat when compared to the Volvo SUV.

Additionally, when it comes to hauling cargo around, the X1 has more space for your gear than the XC40. Suitcases, groceries, or golf clubs, you can carry more of what's important to you in the X1, which has a cargo hold of more than 27 cubic feet. Meanwhile, the Volvo XC40 cargo hold tops out at just around 20 cubic feet.

Standard and Optional Equipment

While both of these compact crossovers offer drivers a similar menu of standard features and amenities, the BMW X1 allows for a little more wiggle room when it comes to add-ons and standalone tech. In addition to the standard roster, the X1 has options that include ambient interior lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless device charging, all of which can be added to even the base model, entry-level X1. But the Volvo XC40, on the other hand, doesn't make these sought-after features available on the base model and, in fact, doesn't have them available until the top-of-the-line trims.
